Hercules Wimbledon’s senior men produced their best-ever team performance to win silver at the London Cross-Country Championships at Parliament Hill Fields.

Despite horrendous conditions, it is the first time since the championships were enlarged in 1965 to incorporate the 20 outer London boroughs that the man have finished runners up.

The only other time Hercules medalled in these championships was in 2013 when they secured the bronze team medals.

Two of that medal-winning team, Jonathan Cornish and Joe Clark, were in this year’s silver medal-winning squad.

However, it was Fred Slemeck who led the Hercules Wimbledon team in on Saturday finishing fifth out of more than 350 runners, and covering the 10km course in 34 minutes 14 seconds. Cornish was seventh in 34:27, Ben Toomer 15th in 35:03 and Clark 21st in 35:50.

There were 11 Hercules runners in action, and others to finish in the top 100 were Rob Tuer (54th in 37:59), David Grima (57th in 38:05) and Neil Fraser (62nd in 38:19).

Hercules’s Claire Grima was top woman over 35 veteran finisher in the 6km championship finishing fourth out of more than 200 runners in 23:43.

Over 50 veteran Lisa Thomas, continuing her return to fitness after injury, finished 79th in 27:43.

Club mate Valerie Parocki was 27th out of 128 runners in the girls U13 race.

Highest placed Hercules runner in the six London Youth Games championships was Gon Declare who was 14th out of 185 runners in the boys U13 race, with clubmate Josh Tatters one second behind in 15th.
