Croydon Harrier Stevie Lawrence took the spoils in the junior women's category at the final Surrey women's cross-country league meeting at Farthing Downs.

The Warlingham school student completed the five-mile course in 34 minutes 46 seconds to be the first junior woman home by nearly two minutes. She would finish 28th overall and fifth in the Division Two event.

She spearheaded the Croydon challenge with debutant Anna Corby (187th, 45:31), Jules Williams (220th, 47:41) and Jennifer Beecroft (235th, 48:46) enjoying good showings out of 324 finishers. The team were 17th out of the 35 featured clubs.

Meanwhile, the men's top-flight adventure came to an end on Saturday at Richmond Park as they finished ninth out of the nine competing clubs.

They did however cling onto eighth overall in the Division One ahead of Reigate, but the relegation to the league’s second tier was still confirmed however with the bottom two to go down.

There were still valiant efforts however from the 13 strong Croydon outfit with Mark Plackett (32nd) and Jake English (57th) shining in particular over the 5.4mile course.

English was runner-up in the junior men's category and secured third overall in the division's individual standings.

Others to feature in the overall individual standings were Norman Hemming (171st, 47:24) and Colin Oxlade (130th, 37:39) who were both third in the M60 and M50 age groups respectively.

David Brown (88th, 33;37), Alan Burn (109th, 34:41), Glenn Barden (111th, 34:47), Mohsin Harhara (121st, 36:14), Neil Aikman (126th, 36:56) and Mark Lynch (127th, 36:58) were among the others in the scoring 10.

In the young athlete’s ranks, Omar Harhara was 11th in the U17/15 race with Dane Lawrence 32nd - the team finished the season in seventh.

In the U13 category, Matis Godet crossed the line in 42nd, and the team finished the season in 10th.

The club’s next test comes on February 21 at the English National championships at Parliament Hill.
