Herne Hill Harriers' week of competition saw two club records broken with Jessie Knight setting a new standard in the senior women's 400m in Loughborough, and Ore Adamson claiming the U13 girls 150m mark at home at Tooting Bec.

Two other club athletes pitted themselves against some top athletes in the country in their events, as another club record holder Katie Snowden was an excellent fourth in a competitive British Milers Club 800m race in Oxford, and Gavin Johnson-Assoon placed third in a javelin competition in Birmingham.

Knight finally improved her own senior women's 400m mark two years after she first put her name against this record when winning the English Schools Championship as she clocked 54.23 seconds at the Loughborough European Athletics Permit meeting.

Also at Loughborough, Byron Robinson recorded good sprint marks, his 21.66secs in the 200m being notable, while Rushane Thomas ran his fastest time over senior height 110m hurdles with 14.31secs, but the following wind was over the legal limit.

Adamson set her third Harriers club record of the summer when coming second in the U13 girls 150m in a time of 19.00secs in the club's final Youth Development League Southern Premier match at Tooting Bec on Saturday.

Ore, who has also set club best marks in the 75m and long jump in which she leads the national rankings with 5.16m, bettered the record which has stood for 14 years.

This match also saw good performances from debutant Rhys Blake Butler who won the U13 boys 100m and 200m in times which put him in the top 20 in the county and Natasha Alfred who won the U15 girls 100m and 200m, and Maddie Shaw who won the U15 girls 800m.

Both had reached finals of the English Schools Championships the weekend before and the meeting featured several English Schools medallists.

Faced with strong opposition Herne Hill Harriers youngsters team struggled overall and we were unable to avoid finishing last and will next summer be in Division One.

In Oxford Snowden lined up against household names Hannah England and Marilyn Okoro in a strong BMC Grand Prix women's A 800m race on the famous Iffley Road track.

Snowden finished a very good fourth in her second best ever time of two minutes 4.04secs and is now getting herself well back on target for the races to come.

In Birmingham, Johnson-Assoon threw close to his best in the javelin in the UK Athletics Jumps and Throws Fest as he recorded a best mark of 65.59m for a good third place against international opponents.

The athlete was still recovering from a recent case of food poisoning this was a performance that suggest a new PB should be just around the corner when in full health.

Earlier in the week, Hannah Edwards had shown possibly even greater perseverance and staying power than Knight, as she set her first 800m PB for six years since the age of 16.

Edwards was a superb eighth in the Watford BMC Gold Standard women's A race and she broke the 2:10 barrier for the first time, clocking 2.09.99.

On the roads Jonathan Stead led a group of Herne Hill runners in placing second at the Elmbridge 10k in 33.07, only just outside his PB on a warm, humid day.

Stead was backed up by Harriers club mates Ed and Bec Barrow, Cindy Godwin, who ran a good PB after injury, Mandy Brown & Ieva Lobacuite.

Elsewhere, M40 athlete Simon Coombes won the Luton 10k ourright, showing his younger opponents a clean pair of heels with a time of 33.41 on a course said to be worth up to a minute compared to faster venues due to the severity of its terrain.
