Camoe trio get Olympic nod
Tim Brabants and Jessica Walker have all been named in Team GB’s flat-water canoe sprint squad for this summer's Olympic Games.
Hampton Hill’s Jess Walker will compete in the women's K4 500m – as will Elmbridge Canoe Club’s Louise Sawers – and also goes in the K1 200m.
While Teddington-based Brabants, who trains with the Royal Canoe Club, will be competing in his fourth Olympic Games and will defend the men’s K1 1,000m title he won in Beijing four years ago.
“I am really excited to be selected for my fourth Olympic Games,” said Brabants, who had to come through a race-off with Paul Wycherley to secure his place.
“Now the selection process is complete, I can really focus on defending my Olympic title in London 2012.
“I am also really looking forward to seeing the 200m boys racing and hopefully winning the medals they deserve.”
Elmbidge Canoe Club’s Sawers, who is competing in her first Olympics, added: “I am so proud to be selected as part of Team GB.
“With the added excitement of it being a home Olympics, it will be an experience I will never forget.”
Walker trains at Royal Canoe Club in Teddington alongside Brabants and was pleased to get a second crack at the Olympics having come 17th four years ago.
“I am looking forward to going to my second Olympic Games and am especially excited it is on home turf,” she said.
“All the girls are working hard to get the best out of ourselves and it is a privilege to share this experience with my team mates.”
