Six wickets and 48 runs from former England Test spinner Shaun Udal helped Surrey Championship Division Two leaders Leatherhead beat second placed Worcester Park by three wickets at Fetcham Grove on Saturday.

Udal claimed 6-36 to dismiss his side’s visitors for 146, with skipper Rob Waite providing the resistance with a patient 78.

Waite’s men reduced the hosts to 26 for five, before former Middlesex captain Udal and Mike Nicol (50) resisted the best efforts of opening bowler Craig Marshall (5-53) to inspire their side to the win.

Worcester Park remain second in the table – 14 points adrift of Leatherhead – and host mid-table Ashford on Saturday.

Former first-class cricketer Gary Butcher’s 105 helped fire Esher into the Surrey Championship Division Two promotion race. Butcher helped his side pile up 254 for nine at Trinity Mid-Whitgiftians on Saturday at New Road, before Kurham Irshad claimed 7-34 to dismiss the hosts for 77.

The result puts Esher in touch with the top two ahead of Saturday’s visit of bottom-club Cobham.

In the same division, James Newell claimed 6-34 as Walton beat Horsley & Send by 84 runs. In Division One, East Molesey beat bottom-club Brook by 63-runs and, in Division Five, a 108-run partnership from Tahir Khan (71) and Nadeem Malik (46) earned Kingstonian a winning draw at Stoke D’Abernon.
