Oldham Athletic 3 Brentford 2 Five goals, two penalties and several questionable refereeing decisions led to an exciting game at Boundary Park on Tuesday night in which visiting Brentford's six-game unbeaten run came to an end, writes Chris Wickham.

Brentford were forced into a last minute change when Michael Dobson was injured in the warm up. This forced a reshuffle that saw Gavin Mahon move to right back and Steve Hunt to right midfield. Paul Gibbs returned after injury to play on the left side of midfield, while Steven Sidwell moved into the centre.

Brentford had a legitimate shout for a penalty early on when Darren Powell appeared to be impeded before he could get his head to a free kick, but the referee deemed the challenge to be fair and allowed play to continue. However, Oldham were awarded a penalty just past the quarter-hour mark when David Eyres was fouled in the box. Carlo Corazzin's spot kick was low to Smith's right and the keeper made a full stretch diving save to turn it past the post for a corner.

After 30 minutes Brentford took the lead. Ben Burgess found space 25 yards from goal and ran past his marker to slot past Gary Kelly from the edge of the area. The Bees looked likely to hold their lead until the stroke of half-time when Oldham were awarded a second penalty in a controversial decision, Ivar Ingimarsson adjudged to have fouled Smart while contesting a header. This time Eyres stepped up and blasted high past Smith to leave the scores level at one apiece at the break.

Shortly after half-time Brentford thought they had taken the lead, but Owusu's stabbed finish was ruled out for an infringement by the speedy striker. Ten minutes later the home side took the lead, Smart volleying home at the far post after Ingimarsson, Burgess and Ijah Anderson contrived to give the ball away needlessly in midfield.

Martin Rowlands was introduced for the tiring Gibbs on 67 minutes and as on Saturday, within a minute a goal was scored, however, on this occasion Oldham were the recipients. Smith came out to collect, but was beaten to the ball by Smart who placed the ball into an empty net for his second of the night.

Brentford pushed forward in an attempt to get back into the game but were rewarded with just three minutes remaining. Rowlands' excellent through ball found Burgess free of his marker and he placed the ball past Kelly to set up an interesting final passage of play in which the Bees failed to find an equaliser.
