Sutton Common Rovers league campaign ended in disappointment when they picked up just two points from their final three games, and finished the season in third spot, writes Gary Brigden.

Heading into Saturday's trip to Horley Town they knew only a win would do, and that they would need Bedfont Sports to drop points if they were to take the promotion battle to the final game.

Unfortunately a lacklustre performance saw the side held to a goalless draw, and that result coupled with Bedfont Sports late winner against Walton & Hersham meant that Bedfont and not Rovers were promoted to Step 4.

A much changed Rovers side then saw out their league campaign with a 3-1 loss away at impressive league newboys Balham.

Rovers lead on 15 minutes through Matt Farrell, but two defensive errors gifted Balham a half time lead.

Rovers spent much of the second half camped inside the Balham half, but resolute defending, good goalkeeping and missed chances meant they were unable to find the breakthrough, and Balham sealed the win with virtually the last kick of the game.

Despite the disappointing end to the season, Rovers have finished in their highest ever league position, and recorded their most points in a Combined Counties Premier division season.

They now have a semi final away to CB Hounslow Utd, in the Southern Combination Cup, on 10th May to look forward to.
