Sutton United have announced their first pre-season fixture for the coming campaign, a mouth-watering home game with League Two side Coventry City.

The match scheduled for Saturday, July 8 (kick-off 3pm) will, of course, rekindle memories of the last occasion the sides met.

Their FA Cup third round tie of 1989 has gone down in football folklore with the U’s causing one of the biggest upsets in the competition’s history by beating the Sky Blues, who were flying high in the old First Division, 2-1 in front of 8,000 fans at Gander Green Lane.

The football landscape has changed dramatically since then with just one division now separating the two clubs, a situation almost unthinkable back in 1989.

Both sides have had mixed fortunes in the 28 years since they last met.

The Midlanders won the Checkatrade Trophy last season with a 2-1 win over Oxford United in front of 75,000 at Wembley Stadium but also suffered the latest in a series of relegations which will see them play fourth tier football next season for the first time in 58 years.

Sutton, meanwhile, have bounced back in style from the bitter disappointment of relegation to the Ryman League in 2007.

The U’s sealed the Vanarama National South title in 2015/16 on the back of a 26 game unbeaten run before cementing a mid-table place in their first season back in English football’s fifth division since 2000.

If that wasn’t enough, Paul Doswell's men made global headlines with another FA Cup run that saw them beat AFC Wimbledon and Leeds United on their way to a fifth round clash with Premier League giants Arsenal which the Gunners won 2-0 in front of a live TV audience of millions.

Sutton, who also announced three new signings this week, will take on some of their old adversaries from the Vanarama National South during pre-season.

Hemel Hempstead Town visit Gander Green Lane on July 15.

The following Tuesday (July 18) they travel to Dartford and then visit Havant and Waterlooville on Saturday, July 22.

A week later (July 29) the U's host Chelmsford City.

Doswell also secured the signature of a fourth signing today (Thursday).

Defender Aswad Thomas becomes the third player within a week to join Sutton from Dover Athletic.

Thomas, 27, started his career at Charlton Athletic before going on to play for Woking, Braintree Town and Grimsby Town, amongst other teams, and he has also represented England C.

Thomas said: "When I knew Sutton United were interested I was keen to listen and understand what role they had in mind for me.

"Seeing the other three players that have already signed this week, and knowing the quality  of players like Craig Eastmond, Nicky Bailey, Jamie Collins and Kieron Cadogan already there, I was buzzing when Paul said he wanted me.

"It was an easy decision to make and I can’t wait for the pre-season to start."
