Harlequins’ winger Marland Yarde has returned to the England fold after an 18-month absence to declare the side confident ahead of the tour of Australia.

The winger scored on Sunday as England came from behind to beat Wales 27-13 at Twickenham and win the Old Mutual Wealth Cup.

Now the squad head down under to face the Wallabies in a three-Test series starting on June 11 in Brisbane.

Yarde will be joined by Quins team-mates Kyle Sinckler, Chris Robshaw, Danny Care and Mike Brown – while James Horwill is the only England-based player in the Aussie camp.

Also joining the England contingent is Jack Clifford, who scored his first international try in the win over Wales.

Yarde said: “After going down [against Wales] in the first half, the guys showed real fight to stick in the game and pull away in the second half.

“Initially we did not control the ball as well as we wanted, we turned it over a bit too easily, we gave Wales the opportunities and we were not winning those collisions.

“But we fixed it towards the end of the first half, and we came out in the second half all guns blazing – we left a few tries out there and could have won by more.

“But we’re pleased with the second half performance and how we controlled the game, and we know we’ll have to be even better to beat Australia.”

He added: “It gives the side massive confidence ahead of the Australia tour – it’s all about keeping that winning mentality.

“There have been a lot of new guys coming in, I feel like one myself as it’s almost two years since I last played in the team.

“All the guys who played their first games gave a really good account of themselves, and showed what it meant to play for England.”

Clubmate Care, a second half replacement against Wales, hailed the Twickenham crowd’s send off.

“It was a good win on Sunday in a so-called friendly, everyone knows it is never a friendly game when you play Wales,” he said.

“But to see the ground at full capacity, the crowd support was amazing – it was a sea of white as usual and the noise was amazing.

“Now the tour really starts, it is all about Brisbane and getting that first win.”

Meanwhile, Harlequins have signed 29-year-old second row Mark Reddish from Highlanders in New Zealand.

Director of Rugby John Kingston said: “Mark will give us a huge injection of experience and know-how to the group at a time when we traditionally lose players to international commitments.

“His ability to play in both the second and back rows will provide additional flexibility.”
