Brentford head coach Dean Smith says he has not given up hope of retaining the services of James Tarkowski and Alan Judge this transfer window.

Judge was on target as the Bees beat Preston North End 3-1 to end a run of four straight defeats for the Championship club on Saturday.

Tarkowski, the subject of an approach from Burnley earlier this month, sat out the match and is unlikely to feature in Tuesday's clash with Leeds United at Griffin Park.

The 23-year-old defender was disciplined by the Bees last week after refusing to play against the Clarets 10 days ago and he has not featured since.

"We all like Alan Judge and we want to keep him at the football club," said Smith on Saturday.

"He puts in performances like that, with a goal, and it shows his application and enthusiasm to be at this club.

He added: "I believe  the situation with James Tarkowski is retrievable. I spoke with James about it and told him I think he made the wrong decision.

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

Riding through it: Alan Judge has shown no sign of being distracted by transfer speculation surrounding his future

"He gave his reasons. I don't think it's right for him to play at the moment, but there will be a time when it is right.

"They are young men and we sometimes forget that. We've all made mistakes. At this club we try and help people come through those mistakes.

"We're certainly trying to help him, because we believe it was a mistake, and James might not.

We know what a good player James is and we'd like to have him around.

"It's been dealt with internally. It's too early to say if he will be available on Tuesday. I gave him five days off, so need to asses his fitness."

Bees midfielder Toumani Diagouraga confirmed his departure from Griffin Park this weeked as he sealed a move to Leeds United.

The 28-year-old Frenchman has signed a two-and-half-year deal at Elland Road and is free to face his former club at Griffin Park on Tuesday night.
