Harlequins have backed proposed changes to the Premiership salary cap after officially confirming they had not been investigated for alleged breaches of the rules.

Premiership Rugby announced last month they had concluded an investigation into possible overspend of last season’s £5.1million cap by some clubs, but would not make their findings public due to legal arguments.

A host of clubs – including Wasps, Newcastle, Sale and Worcester – were quick to deny any wrong doing.

Director of rugby Conor O’Shea reacted last Wednesday by insisting Quins had and would only ever spend up to the limit and would always ‘play by the rules’.

It took until today for the club to release an official statement to supporters via its website, with officials reiterating support for new safeguards and an increase of the cap to £6.5million – to be introduced next season – to ensure rivals also operate within the limits.

“The implementation of the cap enables the Aviva Premiership to be among the most competitive leagues in world sport,” said the Quins statement.

“It aims to provide a level playing field, while also protecting the sustainability of clubs.

“As a club, we welcome the introduction of additional safeguards within the salary cap framework that are designed to increase enforceability and transparency.

“We look forward to working alongside our fellow clubs to ensure we never find ourselves in this position again.

“As we have previously stated, every season we endeavour to spend up to the salary cap and not a penny more. We will continue to do so under the new framework.”
