Brentford might be relying on the fortunes of other teams to land a Championship play-off berth on the season’s final day, but departing boss Mark Warburton reckons fans would have taken that prospect last August.

The Bees, who won 2-0 at Reading last week, host relegated Wigan Athletic tomorrow knowing they need to win comfortably to stand a chance of finishing in the top six.

They also need Ipswich Town and Derby County above them to slip up against Blackburn Rovers and the Royals respectively to open the door to a promotion shot.

The story was very different five games ago when they sat fifth in the table, but some disappointing results – namely against Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday – have taken matters out of their hands.

Wigan arrive at Griffin Park having been condemned to the drop in mid-week and, while Bees fans will be looking nervously at results elsewhere tomorrow, the manager is only thinking of beating the lacklustre Latics.

“All we can do next week is focus as well as we can,” he said at the Madjeski stadium last week.

“All we can worry about is Brentford. It’ll come down to just one or two goals.

We need to deliver a positive, high tempo, quality performance.

He added: “If you said to any Brentford fan at the start of the season we would be vying for the play-offs going into game 46, they’d have taken it.”

Warburton, who guided the Bees to promotion from League One 12 months ago, leaves Griffin Park for pastures new at the end of the campaign – whether that ends in promotion to the Premier League or not.

QPR and Fulham are rumoured to be among those interestsed in the former City trader’s services next term, although the 52-year-old says he has not received any job offers since announcing his imminent exit earlier this season.

But the manager, a former sporting director at Griffin Park, leaves on his own terms.

“It’s very disappointing [to be leaving],” he added.

“It’s a great club and I’ve been here four-and-a-half years now. I’m delighted to be associated with a great football club.”

Midfielder Alex Pritchard was named in the PFA Championship team of the season on Sunday, while striker Scott Hogan has undergone more surgery on the knee injury that has kept the 23-year-old sidelined since August.
