Banstead racing driver Paul Rivett is the 2014 Courier Connections Renault UK Clio Cup "Masters Cup" champion following a dramatic final weekend of the season at Brands Hatch.

As well as taking the class title for experienced Clio Cup competitors, the WDE Motorsport driver and team manager also won the final race of the year on Sunday.

Surging through from fifth on the grid to lead out of the first corner, having avoided the spinning cars of Josh Cook (Bath) and James Colburn (Worthing) at the exit of Paddock Hill Bend, Rivett went on to see off Alex Morgan (Reading) by 1.8 seconds to claim his maiden win of the season.

“We’ve been close to winning a few races this year”, said Rivett.

“If I hadn’t won then it would have been my first season ever where I hadn’t won at least one race.

"It’s been a great year, the team has done a fantastic job – massive thank you to Wayne Eason from WDE for making this happen and to all of our sponsors."

He added: "Massive congratulations to Mike [Bushell] on winning the championship too, he’s done a fantastic job and so has Josh [Cook]. They’ve been the class of the field all season.”

In race one on Saturday, Rivett finished seventh overall after contact from rival Ash Hand (Nuneaton) but still won the Masters Cup class.

Post-race, though, he was elevated into sixth place when Hand was penalised for the errant move.
