Ross Hutchins’ dreams of reaching a Grand Slam final were shattered last night after an epic mixed doubles semi-final at the US Open.

With partner Yung-Jan Chan, Hutchins went down 7-5 4-6 10-7 to the number one seeds Bruno Soares and Sania Mirza in the Louis Armstrong stadium at Flushing Meadows.

It had all started so well for the Brit and his Chinese Taipei partner as they raced into a 5-0 lead in the first set, only to lose it 7-5.

After fighting back in the second set, and then from 5-0 in the third, Hutchins and Chan could not get over the line.

Hutchins, who is based in Wimbledon Village, said: “It was a strange match. I don't think I've ever played a match like that where you're playing that well and are in such control to then being such a role reversal.

“We got ourselves in a decent position but couldn't quite get ourselves over the line.

“It would have been amazing to make a Grand Slam final here. It's the stuff dreams are made of, but not to be.”

Hutchins now returns to the second-tier challenger circuit as he works to climb the rankings from his current position of 148.

The 29-year-old has also parted ways with his men’s doubles partner Colin Fleming, albeit temporarily, until Hutchins’ rank is high enough to allow them to play together at ATP tour events.
