Harry Aikines-Aryeetey says the Team GB 100m squad is capable of competing with the best in the world.

The claim comes after a successful medal winning performance at the European Championships in Zurich last week.

The 25-year-old Sutton & District AC star rounded off his brilliant Euro campaign on Sunday by helping James Ellington, Richard Kilty and Adam Gemili to claim gold in men’s 4x100m sprint relay in 37.93 seconds, while Germany and France settled for silver and bronze, respectively.

Aikines-Ayreetey leaves Switzerland with two medals after also winning bronze in the men’s individual 100m event, won by Croydon Harrier James Dasaolu.

"This is a new generation of sprinters and what you are seeing is a whole group of athletes coming together and performing,” said Aikines-Aryeetey, a former pupil at Greenshaw High School.

“It is about enjoying ourselves now then moving forward knowing what we are capable of."

Meanwhile Aikines-Aryeetey will be back in action this Sunday at Birmingham Grand Prix IAAF Diamond League meeting.
