Sutton CC skipper David Mitchell has set his players a challenge for the final four games of the Surrey Championship season.

Last weekend’s 19-run win over the Premier Division’s second from bottom club Valley End keeps Sutton in third, albeit 47 points off leaders Reigate Priory.

However, despite the title having slipped away, Mitchell is demanding no let up from his charges.

“We spoke about this as a team last week and the challenge is to finish the remainder of the season unbeaten,” he said.

“We’re 15 points behind Wimbledon in second, and so it is not impossible for us to catch them.”

He added: “We’re delighted with how this season has gone when you consider the poor start we made last time round.

“We’ve followed on from the end of last season, and what is most pleasing is that we have no real stand out players, it is all about the team ethic.

“You could pick out a couple of names but that would be unfair to the rest.”

Against Valley End, Garth Davson (66) and Daniel Edwards (63) saw Sutton to 267-8 – having been struggling on 111-6.

With the ball, Harry Allen (2-58) and Daniel Douthwaite (2-32) were among the wickets as Valley End reached 248-8 in the 50th over.

Sutton go to Sunbury this weekend.

Mitchell said: “Sunbury have been a top club for some time, so it will be good to measure ourselves against them.”
