Putney boxer Joe Joyce has played down his professional demolition of Scotland’s Ross Henderson in the last 16 of the Commonwealth Games super heavyweight division.

The 28-year-old, who boxes out of Earlsfield ABC, will now face Mike Sekabembe of Uganda in Friday’s semi- finals after Tuesday’s win over Henderson on a third round TKO.

Joyce said: “It’s our third fight and Ross is a great opponent. It was a great fight.

“Practice makes perfect and I landed on the night.”

He added: “I’m just enjoying the crowd and all the support.”

Henderson said: “Joe’s a hard puncher and I know he was going to come out hard.

“Joe’s number four in the world for a reason and it’s not because he’s a big slow dumpling – he’s a world-class puncher.

“I just hope the big man goes on and wins it now.”

Victory over Sekabembe would set up a shot at gold against Efe Ajagba of Nigeria or Joseph Goodall from Australia.

Joyce also came in for praise from former world champion Barry McGuigan.

McGuigan, who won the WBA world featherweight title in 1985, said: “It was a brilliant, tough and very entertaining boxing match.

“The lighter boxers might struggle to get some real power behind them with the extra padding in the gloves, but these super heavyweights get some purchase.

“Henderson gave it absolutely everything and kept coming back for more even though he was on the end of some serious blows from Joyce.

“A technical knockout from Joyce did it in end and, although you can never tell in his weight division, Joyce looks good value to go all the way.”
