Epsom CC skipper Danny Secchi could not hide his disappointment after his side managed only a winning draw in Division Two of the Surrey Championship at struggling Chessington on Saturday.
After carding 218-7dec, featuring Phil Edwards’ half century (56), Epsom could not get past Chessington’s stubbirn middle order, despite Godfrey Stevens’ second five-wicket haul of the season (5-24).
In the end, Chessington finished on 132-6 off 51 overs.
Secchi said: “Chessington parked the bus very early and we tried everything to get past them but to no avail.
“They were not interested in risking a losing draw point in pursuit of 13 points for the win.
“They started quite well with the bat, but as soon as a couple of wickets went down they went back into their Chessington hole.”
He added: “I know it’s down to us to get past that, but sometimes you want an opposition to at least meet you half-way and create a game.”
Epsom go to Dulwich this weekend, another team struggling at the wrong end of the table.
Secchi said: “The best way to stop them parking the bus is to bowl first, then you have control of the game.
“I didn’t do that against Chessington, but I will if I win the toss at Dulwich.”
