Richmond and Twickenham Times: Disappointed: Sutton & District sprinter Harry Aikines-Ayreetey Disappointed: Sutton & District sprinter Harry Aikines-Ayreetey

A disappointed Harry Aikines-Aryeetey felt he should put on a better performance at the Glasgow Grand Prix IAAF Diamond League meeting on Friday.

In his penultimate race before Glasgow 2014, the 25-year-old Sutton & District sprinter came seventh in men’s 100m in a time of 10.21 seconds on the newly laid Hampden Park Commonwealth Games track.

Jamaica's Nickel Ashmeade claimed victory in 9.97secs, while his compatriot and double London 2012 Olympic silver medallist, Yohan Blake dramatically pulled up half way through the race.

Aikines-Aryeetey, a runner-up at British Championships a couple of weeks ago, said: “It was not a great race and I got separated from the start.

“I reacted alright but I didn’t really do much, you do get kind off sectioned off in that sort of race.

“I didn’t execute my race as I would have liked, I know I can do better.”

Aikines-Aryeetey will begin his quest for Commonwealth Games glory on July 27 and says he is impressed with the track at Hampden Park.

“It’s a quick track, if you look at the people who ran today they didn’t ran slow,” he added.

Also in Glasgow, Wallington’s multi Paralympic Games gold medallist David Weir tuned up his Glasgow 2014 preparations with a superb victory in men's T54 wheelchair race clocking three minutes 8.78secs.

“It has been good to come to Glasgow and race two weeks before the Commonwealth Games,” said Weir.

“I’m really pleased with how my training is going so to race here and get the win bodes well two weeks before the competition.”
