Croydon Harriers’ youngsters were on song for the borough last weekend in the London Youth Games.

The athletes scooped seven medals with the the boys squad finishing fourth and the girls ninth, helping Croydon finish runners up in a field of 32.

Tyrese Johnson-Fisher (100m) and Verter Oppong-Kyei (long jump, 5.96m), who are both travelling to the English Schools championships this weekend in Birmingham, warmed up with clear victories in their events to win gold.

The girls relay team went one better than their silver medal last year, clocking 50.30 seconds.

The quartet of Ola Olufemi-Krakue, Naomi Hoosang-Robinson, Chanice Gordon and Tosin Salami triumphed in a new championship record.

Gordon (200m) and Salami (100m) added bronze medals in their individual events.

The boys nearly followed suit, with Ezra Rodrigues, Caleb Johnson, Nathaneal Marshall and Javon Reid finishing runners-up.

Reid added individual silver to his tally in the 200m.

Croydon Harrier and four-time Olympian Donna Fraser was on hand to award the medals to the team.

Elsewhere, at the Lily B girl’s league at Croydon Arena on Saturday, the Harriers all but secured their place in the end of season cup final with a clear win over their nearest rivals.

Croydon finished on 330 points with last year’s runners up Guildford & Godalming (267) in pursuit.

There were 11 event maximums during the afternoon, with particular success in the throws.

Coralie Mido and Irene Afriye won the U17 women’s A and B shot putt, while Aaliyah Headley and Ines Zepa matched that feat in the U15 girls’ category.

Emma Fossett notched two wins, the first in the hammer, and then a new lifetime best in the U17 women’s javelin of 39.42 m to lift her to 14th in the UK rankings.

Croydon finished the day in style with a clean sweep of the girl’s relays.
