Jonathan Stead became Herne Hill Harriers' one-hour track champion on Saturday after covering more than 11 miles - equivalent to 45 laps of a 400m circuit - in the allotted time.

Stead - who boasts a marathon best of two hours, 24 minutes - ran 18,027m (11.2 miles) around the Tooting Bec track in one hour, with Robin Jones second after running 16,618m (10.3 miles).

Ruth Chalmers dominated the women's event, covering 13,984m (8.7 miles).

Away from the track, Mohammed Ismail clocked a personal best 72:49, in finishing 13th at the Paddock Wood half-marathon, with John Kettle 24th in 74:42.

Marathoner Robert Edwards also posted a personal best, as he finished 55th in 79:08, while Patrik Ewe was 100th in 83:37.

Carl Ferri, meanwhile, was first at the Fast and the Furious Duathlon at Eynsford in Kent.

Ferri was leading at the 2km mark of the first 5km run and would not relinquish the lead in the subsequent 23km bicycle and 5km run.

On the track, Nicholas Atwell won the 100m and 400m events in 11.1secs and 48.3secs respectively at the outdoor Spring Warm Up Meeting at Hornchurch.

Atwell's 100m time was only a tenth of a second outside his best, while his 400m time also suggests the promise of a successful summer track season in which Atwell and training partner Peter Phillips are likely to push each other towards the men's club 400m record.

Harriers' junior middle distance runners were also in action at meetings at Havering and Lee Valley.

Running over 800m at Havering were Bea Sheehan (a personal best 2:49.4), Eva Holland (2:53.9) and Mohammed Ali (another best time of 2:25.11).

Herne Hill runners also recorded a string of fine performances at various parkruns in London.

Jonny Muir (16:30) and Basil Wallace (16:57) were third and seventh respectively at the Bushy parkrun, Gary Ironmonger was sixth at Brockwell Park in 17:37, and John Tayleur was 10th at Dulwich in 17:40.

Harriers senior men's and women's squads will this weekend take on the best of Britain at the national road relays in Birmingham.
