London 2012 Olympian Matt Daly reckons Surbiton are not getting ahead of themselves when it comes to their MHL Premier Division play-off ambitions.

Daly, right, smashed home four goals in the last 20 minutes of Saturday’s clash at Cannock as the Sugden Road side came back from 4-1 down to win 6-4.

Team boss James Lloyd’s men have smashed home 30 goals in winning four of their past six league games to secure a top-four finish and land a shot
at the championship title.

Surbiton are also preparing for the knock-out stages of the EuroHockey League over Easter and Daly insisted qualifying for next year’s competition remained the only priority.

“Our first goal at the start of the season was to make the play-offs,” said the Great Britain international.

“Now we are there, if we win the first game we automatically qualify for Europe.

“It would be great to win the league, but we have to be realistic. You can only build on these things step-by-step.

“The experience we gain this year will prepare us for the next and so on.”

Surbiton trailed 3-0 and then 4-1 in the Midlands before Daly got his first in the 50th minute and then added three more in the last 12 minutes after Alan Forsyth claimed his side’s third goal.

Surbiton, with Forsyth and Daly hitting a rich vein of form, are in full stride with the season’s climax fast approaching.

But the 30-year-old Kingston Grammar School teacher insisted it would be the strength of their squad that will see them through.

“This season has been the same as last year pretty much in that we are just starting to gel,” he added.

“The internationals probably played the same amount of games last year, but instead they are not coming back from training and tournaments tired.

“As always it will be the strength of the squad that will decide who wins the league.”
