Teenage sprinter Rechmial Miller made history when he raced to victory in the England Indoor Championships to become Hercules Wimbledon AC’s first national champion for more than three decades.

The 15-year-old posted a lifetime best time of 6.94 seconds as he stormed home in the men’s U17 60m at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

Miller was favourite for at least a medal after clocking the joint fastest time in winning his semi-final in 6.97secs.

His final winning time was one-hundredth of a second faster than he managed in winning the South of England title at Lee Valley in January.

More impressively, though, he was the first Hercules Wimbledon national champion for 34 years.

It was in 1980 that fellow teenager, Mike Powell, won the national indoor U20 60m title wearing Hercules Wimbledon colours in 6.85secs, and then went on to represent Britain at international level.

Meanwhile, Miller’s brother, Chad, reached the final of the boys’ U15 60m where he finished seventh in a life-time best of 7.45secs.

A third Hercules Wimbledon athlete to reach a national final was Theo Etienne, who raced to seventh place in the men’s U20 60m final in 6.86secs.

Earlier, he posted a faster 6.82secs in finishing runner-up in his semi-final and was the fastest of the 63 first round runners in winning his heat in 6.88secs.
