Richmond director of rugby Steve Hill admitted the last-gasp penalty kick that cost his side a draw at Coventry was nothing short of cruel.

The home side claimed the vital win after one-time Welsh international Barry Davies kicked from his own half in injury time to put Coventry 20-17 ahead.

There was still time for Richmond to scrape a draw but Rob Kirby’s own three-pointer wide on the left  cannoned back off the inside of the post as Richmond slipped to defeat.

And Hill believes that his team’s lack of discipline was their undoing and the only reason that Coventry came away with the point in this National League One clash.

“I thought we did enough to get a draw, if not a win, but the difference was probably the penalty count against us which was too high,” he said.

“But I’m really pleased with the guys’ effort and to get as close as we did to a top side speaks a lot for how well we played.

“It’s amazing – in four games between us, three have been decided by the last kick and one was a draw.

“This was a cruel end to a game in which we played the majority of the rugby. Three tries to one shows the ambition we displayed.

“Our defence at times was magnificent and is an area of our game which continues to improve. Our hosts were very fortunate winners.”
