Hercules Wimbledon AC's teenage sprinter Max Mondelli has been invited to compete in the televised Sainsbury's British Athletics senior indoor championships at Sheffield next month following a flying start to his 2014 racing programme.

The 18-year-old received the invite after dominating the sprinters at the Metaswitch Games indoor meeting at Lee Valley, where he twice improved on his previous best 60m time, breaking the seven-second barrier for the first time.

He won his first men's U20 race by more than a metre in 6.90 seconds, which was not only the best of the 25 U20 sprinters in action but was also faster than any of the senior men sprinters.

Mondelli went even faster in his second race clocking 6.87 and now faces the biggest challenge of his athletics career when he comes up against Britain's top Olympic and international sprinters.

The King's College School pupil, who is coached by Hercules Wimbledon's former Cuban international Juan Hernandez, said: "I'm really thrilled at being invited to run at Sheffield. This will be my biggest competition but it's going to be tough.

"I'm obviously going to do my best but I expect to face some tough opposition and I don't expect to get beyond the first round."

The British Athletics Championships are being staged on the weekend of February 8 and 9, and his time would have ranked him ninth among UK U20 sprinters in 2013 and only one other UK U20 sprinter has run faster this year.

This coming weekend, Mondelli is returning to Lee Valley to compete in the South of England indoor championships and the following weekend he is among a contingent of Hercules Wimbledon athletes competing in an indoor meeting in Jablonec in the Czech Republic.

Sprinter Phillip Mauge was the best of a group of seven Hercules Wimbledon pace-men in action in the Better Athletics Indoor Open Meeting at Crystal Palace.

Mauge was third fastest of 64 sprinters in the 60m, clocking 7.09 seconds to finish second in his first round race.
