Laura Robson out of Australian Open after 50 minutes in 6-3 6-0 defeat to Kirsten Flipkens
Laura Robson’s involvement in the Australian Open lasted just 50 minutes after an opening round defeat at the hands of Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens.
Robson’s build up to the Grand Slam had been plighted by a wrist injury, and the 19-year-old had only played half a match in two build-up competitions.
Her lack of game time showed as Flipkens, the number 18 seed, romped into the second round 6-3, 6-0 with Robson racking up 32 errors compared to her opponent’s four.
“It was up and down the whole time, and I don’t think I ever really got into a rhythm at all,” Robson, who turns 20 next week, said.
“I was not really able to deal with her slice that well. It just did not go well. I definitely expected to play better, but it happens.
“And I did not really have any expectations going in because I didn’t know what it was going to be like out there.”
Following the exit of compatriot Heather Watson to Daniela Hantuchova (7-5, 3-6, 6-3), Great Britain have just one representative left in the tournament in Andy Murray.
