Rosslyn Park coach Alex Codling was left toasting a job well done after his side ran in eight unanswered tries against Hull Ionians.

With 11 National League One wins to the solitary victory managed by Hull, Park were in confident mood as they welcomed their visitors on Saturday.

And there was no hint of complacency as tries from Peter Hodgkinson, Harry Rowland and Hugo Ellis had them 17-0 up at the break.

And they did not take their foot of the gas in the second 40 either, as both Hodgkinson and Ellis grabbed their second of the afternoon, while David Vincent, Alex Lundberg, and replacement Edward Lewis-Pratt also joined the try scoring party.

The result was a comprehensive 48-0 bonus point victory, leaving them second in the league behind Doncaster Knights, leaving Codling beaming from ear to ear.

“I was delighted to get the bonus point win,” he said. “They were a very dogged and determined side.

“Even though they are struggling in the league, I reminded the guys there are no easy games in this division, anybody is capable of producing a shock and we were determined to put in a professional performance.

“We were not at our best but we still managed to get a really good result, especially with not conceding any points.

“I think we are only the second team to stop the opposition from scoring any points so that was very pleasing.

“When you are scoring a lot of tries, you don’t always see the work that is going in behind it but there was a great mixture of tries, a couple for the forwards and a couple from bits of individual skill.”

Park were on the attack from the off, opening the scoring in the 11th minute through Hodgkinson, before Rowland added a second 13 minutes later, converted by Samuel Katz, and Ellis added a third on 29 minutes.

Ellis again dotted down shortly after the break before Vincent quickly followed, Katz adding the extras on both occasions.

Lundberg scored a sixth try just before the hour, and while Hull were then reduced to 14 for the third time in the match, Park would not add any further tries until late on through Lewis-Pratt and Hodgkinson.

The game marked the half way stage of the season leaving Codling pleased with his side’s progress heading into next week’s game against Richmond, a team they beat 26-15 earlier in the season.

“Its been a busy period the last few weeks, a lot of the boys work in the city so it’s been a bit fractured the last three or four weeks with training and work commitments,” he added.

“We have just been trying to make sure we get the results on Saturday, we’ve very happy with where we are at the moment.

“It was a very tight game against Richmond earlier this season but it was a great advert for the league and hopefully it can be another good one this weekend, they are a good side.”
