Surbiton make solid start to European campaign, but London Olympian warns that the hard work is still to be done
London 2012 Olympian Matt Daly reckons Surbiton are far from the finished article after a mixed start to life in Europe at the weekend.
The Sugden Road outfit reached the last 16 of the Euro Hockey League after they thrashed Austrian side SV Arminen 5-0 on Friday, before losing 3-0 to hosts RC Polo de Barcelona on Sunday to finish second in Pool E.
Coach Todd Williams’ men now head to Belgium in April for the knockout stages of the tournament and Daly admitted the hard work had just started.
“A top weekend away with the @SurbtionHC boys,” said Daly on Twitter, ahead of Sunday’s MHL Premier League trip to Loughborough Students.
“A lot learnt and some things to work on. Looking forward to the next round.”
Daly, James Tindall (two), Michael Watt and Alan Forsyth scored to account for Arminen on Friday and their progress was assured on Saturday once the Spaniards beat the Austrians 3-1.
Sunday’s defeat to RC Polo proved of little consequence, but Williams was delighted passage to the Hague later in the season had already been secured.
“This tournament is all about getting through – and I’m pleased we’ve achieved that,” he said.
“I was really pleased they were prepared to do all the hard work and stick in there against very determined opposition and finally seized on all their late opportunities to build up the scoreline.”
