Frustration for Flowers at Brands, but Matt is taking the positives
Banstead motorhead Matt Flowers endured a frustrating weekend at Brands Hatch in the latest round of the Ginetta GT5 Challenge G40 Championship.
The 25-year-old claimed 11th, 12th and ninth place finishes, but he had to start from 15th on the grid after qualifying was wrecked by brake failure.
The weekend summed up Flowers’ season behind the wheel, but with just one round at Donington in October remaining, he is taking the positives from having made the end of the season.
After 18 rounds, Flowers, who drives a Ford Zetec 1.81 engine car for Academy Motorsport, lies ninth in the 25-man standings.
He said: “After a good show in Spa last time out [seventh, eighth , sixth] I was disappointed with Brands, but the brake failure in qualifying really set me back.
“The brake line cracked on the fastest corner, but fortunately I managed to control the car and cruise round the pits.
“Up to that point, I was in the top 10 of qualifying, but I could not get out again and improve my qualifying time.”
He added: “Overall, it’s been an up and down season. I’ve had some good weekends and some bad, but I have proved I am capable of competing.
“I have developed as a driver, which is a result of being in a far more competitive series. I know my weaknesses and strengths, and these are things I will be working on after Donington in time for the new season.
“The major boost is actually getting through the season. Financially it has been a struggle, which has restricted testing.
“So we are always on the look-out for sponsorship.”
The final meeting of the Championship season takes place on October 5.
