Broncos' Hurst out to make Super League step up
4:00pm Monday 21st January 2013 in Sport
Alex Hurst is not just happy with signing for a Super League club, now he is out to land a starting slot for the London Broncos on the opening day of the season.
The Scottish international had been playing for Swinton Lions last season before being spotted by the Broncos and offered a trial by head coach Tony Rea.
Hurst made an impressive scoring debut for the Broncos in a 74-6 pre-season friendly win over the London Skolars at the HAC in London earlier this month.
The 21-year-old is part of the 30-man squad for this week's pre-season tour to the south of France and was again on the scoresheet in Saturday's 34-0 win over Toulouse.
“It was good to get a feel for our game plans and learning how the boys play, it’s good to know how some individuals play with timings and plays,” said Hurst.
“Pre-season has gone pretty quick; it’s been a two or three month period, it’s flown by for me and I’ve enjoyed every day. It’s been hard graft but enjoyable at the same time.
“It’s a bit of new experience for me playing abroad; it’s going to be really good. There are two games to iron out our plays and patterns.
“It’s a good environment for the boys to get to know each other more and come closer together as a team. It brings closer friendships and a bit of banter.
“Like I said when I first signed I just want to be competing, pushing for the first team and hopefully on the back of the trial games I can push into contention for Widnes.”
Kieran Dixon (2), Michael Channing, John O'Donnell, Alex Hurst and Chris, Melling were all on the scoresheet in Saturday's romp, but it was his side's defence that caught Rea's eye.
"Mainly the stuff around the ruck, it wasn’t really one for defending edges or wide sweeping plays," he said.
"It was more about in the contact areas and markers.
“The big thing is we played as a team and a group, everyone was consistent across the whole team.”
