All proceeds from the ticket sales go to MicroLoan Foundation, attendees are also encouraged to run their own fundraising, with suggestions such as bake sales and donating what you’d usually spend on your morning coffee available on their website.

Everyone taking part in the walk receives a chitenge (African batik wrap) on the day to wear in support of MicroLoan Foundation and the women the charity supports. Entertainment and snacks are provided to walkers and supporters of all ages are encouraged to attend.

The idea for the event was formed by a MicroLoan Foundation supporter after meeting a woman named Marianne on a visit to Malawi to see their work.

Marianne is a widow with seven children to look after and used to walk 10km every day to the nearest town to sell firewood to just feed her family.

She was struggling to provide for her children, but thanks to a loan, training and support from MicroLoan Foundation, Marianne was able to start her own business. She now runs a tea shop in the village. The increase in household income means her children are well fed and healthy, and can all go to school.

After being so impressed and inspired by Marianne’s journey, the MicroLoan Foundation supporter decided to set up an event to honour this journey and raise money so that MicroLoan Foundation are able to help more women.

Last year, Walking in Marianne’s Footsteps had over 200 participants and raised over £8,000. The charity hopes to attract more walkers and raise even more money this year.
