One of the Twickenham Upon Thames Rotary Club annual events is its Bridge Tournament to raise funds for the Princess Alice Hospice.

This year’s venue was at Rugby Football Union Twickenham Stadium where a total of 104 players comprising 26 teams of 4 from all over the U.K. and especially from the local area came to compete.

This marathon ran from 1.00 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. with rest periods in between. Participants were supplied with sandwiches, cakes, and other morsels all of which had been prepared by the wives of Club members.

The winning team comprised John Amor, Eddie Richart, Margaret and David Walker, closely followed in second place by John Balson, Ned Paul, Dan O’Farrell, and Maureen Dennison – last year’s winners. The third place was occupied by Chris Smart, John Samuels, Lorne Anderson, and Angela McCready

Three sets of medals (gold, silver, and bronze) plus a bottle of wine were awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd winners. In addition the first winning team received the Dick Muldoon Cup, and the second team the Barry James Cup.

Both of these cups are in memory of two Rotarian bridge players who used to take part in the Tournament, and were also past Club Presidents, now sadly deceased.

The tournament was a very successful event and much enjoyed by all. The Club would like to thank everyone who came to take part, and especially The Rugby Football Union who kindly provided such excellent facilities, and RFU Community Relations Officer Chris Donnelly for his help. A total of £2,350 was raised for the Hospice.

If anyone would like to add to this amount to help the good work of the Home or to give it their time to aid its activities, they are contactable at West End Lane, Esher KT10 8NA (telephone 01372468811), email fundraising@pah.org.uk. Their website is www.pah.org.uk
