'Beyond the Senses' features the renowned Chinese Kunju opera artist Kong Aiping in her ground-breaking re-interpretation of classical Chinese poetry. Set against a serene garden, Kong, as the main character, wanders around and starts to recite and sing about the scenery around her.

She eventually realizes that what she sees and hears are but illusory and unreal, and slowly comes to achieve enlightenment. On the stage, amidst the voice and light strums of the pipa, all enter into a realm of meditation and contemplation.

'Beyond the Senses' is Hong Kong composer Law Wing-fai’s second Atmospheric Music Theatre production, drawing its inspiration from Chinese Kunju opera. Utilizing multi-media elements such as poetry, songs, dance and visual elements to complement the natural timbres of Chinese musical instruments, Mr Law’s 'atmospheric music theatre' hopes to cultivate a mood for reflection as well as a taste of Oriental aesthetics.

Presented by Wuji Ensemble, this production was premiered in Hong Kong in June 2016 to a full-house audience, and will now have a limited run in London for 1 performance only.

The Kunju (Kun opera or Kunqu Opera) is one of the oldest extant forms of Chinese opera, something you don't want to be missed.
