Knowle Green practitioner honoured in garden naming ceremony
After 16 years of service to pre-schoolers in Staines, Annie Barnes has been honoured by Knowle Green Day Nursery with a new adventure play and learning garden named after her.

In the surprise dedication ceremony at the Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ day nursery in Knowle Green, where Annie worked for 16 years, the Early Years Practitioner and keen gardener said she was overwhelmed and very emotional by the honour.

“This has been the most amazing day and will stay in my heart forever. The garden is beautiful and will give all children so many opportunities to develop their potential. I couldn’t be more proud that it bears my name,” she said.

Parents and children past and present turned out to honour Ms Barnes who was also presented with a bouquet of flowers by her former ‘pupil’ and Knowle Green graduate, 13-year-old Ellie Rose White.
Knowle Green Manager, Faye Walker praised Ms Barnes, the first full time member of staff at the newly opened nursery in May 2000, for her dedication to excellence in every aspect of her role.

“Quite simply, she had the ‘wow factor’ with anyone who came into contact with her. She was always creative and the source of fantastic and imaginative ideas,” she said.
“She was particularly brilliant with children with special educational and physical needs demonstrating a knowledge and understanding that was second to none. We all miss her,” she added.

Describing her time at Knowle Green as the happiest of her career, Ms Barnes, who retired to Kent in November 2016 said:
“It was like being part of a very big, warm family. A great team of practitioners, management and parents all working together to give the children the very best nursery experience.

“I remember being in local supermarkets and hearing little voices I recognised and turning corners to big smiles and hugs. People always seem surprised that I never had any children of my own but I always say I have had hundreds of children and I am immensely proud of all of them,” she said.
Knowle Green Manager Faye Walker, said staff were as excited as the children with the new garden attractions which include a farm shop and construction area complete with child-sized tools.

“We have to engage a child’s natural curiosity and wonder at the earliest opportunity and our magical garden is doing just that; inspiring staff and children alike and providing endless opportunities for fun and learning,” she said.
In all but the most extreme weather, budding farmers can organise their ‘livestock’ and plant, tend and harvest herbs and vegetables learning maths, science and respect for the environment as they go. Harvests can be ‘sold’ in the farm shop or provide snacks in nursery where healthy eating and lifestyle messages are promoted.

“All children, including babies, are encouraged to explore and investigate and to question and contribute in a process that not only builds self-esteem but helps practitioners identify particular interests and talents,” said Faye.
