The local branch of the Institution of Engineering and Technology holds meetings on the first Tuesday of each month at the Lion Pub in Wick Road, Teddington. During each of these meetings a speaker talks about his or her experiences in engineering. The meetings start at 7:15 PM in the Function Room of the Lion, and free light refreshments are provided at the conclusion. All are welcome to attend but advance registrations are required (on-line at www.theiet.org/local
/uk/london/airaccide
nt.cfm or by telephone to David Lindsley on 07840 772505).

These lively and informative talks cover the past, present and future of engineering and are pitched at a level which requires no special knowledge. Previous speakers have covered topics as diverse as: ‘How secure is Britain’s electricity power system’; ‘Is British engineering management fit for purpose’; ‘Why “long-life” bulbs don’t last that long’; and ‘The Great Engines at Kempton’.

The talk on February 3rd is ‘Air Accident Investigation in the UK and Europe’ and is presented by a speaker who worked in the Air Accidents Investigation Board for 34 years as an Inspector, most recently as an Investigator in Charge. His work has taken him to a large variety of sites in many parts of the world and he has taken part in the investigation of accidents involving most types of aircraft, ranging from gyro-gliders and hang gliders to jumbo-jets.
