Richmond is still the ultimate destination for property buyers looking to send their children to the best schools, but Richmond Council maintained it could deal with any influx.

A recent study revealed once again that Richmond has the best schools in London.

Of the 33 London boroughs, measured across different variable such as crime rates and flood risk, Richmond came out top in the schools category.

Experian PropertyCheck, which conducted the study, measured the category on average Ofsted scores and the result could explain why so many parents are moving to the borough.

Brent Baker of Cornwall Road has two young children and moved to the area due to the first rate schools.

He said: “We are from Islington originally. Schooling is the main reason we came here to Richmond. My daughter is just about to go to Orleans.”

Other parents have delayed relocating to avoid missing out on London’s best schools because of the catchment areas.

Lisa Coughlan, who has two sons at primary school, said: “We were looking at moving house but wanted to make sure my eldest son got into Teddington High School.”

Some families may rent a property short-term so they are in the catchment area to register for the school, despite being able to buy a home.

David Reed, head of lettings for at Antony Roberts estate agents said: “Richmond is an ultimate destination for people to end up, so we find some families will rent somewhere so they can register for the school, get to know the area and quickly buy a house when one becomes available.”

Earlier this year, demand for primary places in Richmond reached an all-time high and there was concern there may not be enough places for children.

Richmond Council said it could meet the demand for school places from families who move to the area.

A spokesman for Richmond Council said: “We are continuing to provide both sufficiency and choice of schools, by enabling a number of new schools and expanding existing schools. We are therefore fully confident that we will meet the demand for places from families who are drawn to the area.”

Primary schools in Richmond are the best in the country and secondary schools have also improved in recent years.

Richmond Council said: “The reputation of our schools is testament to the high quality and hard work of their staff.”

According to the study, the second best London borough for schools is Bromley, with nearby Kingston coming third.
