The company which runs train services which have been criticised by people travelling in the area where Olympic cycling is taking pace has blamed the "bradley Wiggins effect" for overcrowding.

A spokesman for South West Trains (SWT)  said: “We have strengthened our services and we will be providing a shuttle service between Hampton Court and Surbiton when the time trials finish at 4pm.

“The time trials are very, very busy, especially at Hampton Court which is at the heart of the time trials.”

Extra train services have been announced at 4.09pm, 5.07pm and 5.37pm.

“We are putting in as many train services as possible,” the spokesman added: 

Games organisers predicted there would 600,000 people at the trials today, but the SWT spokesman said these figures could not predict the popularity for cycling that has emerged from Bradley Wiggins recent Tour de France win, when the figures were calculated.

Despite his disappoinment at falling short of a gold medal in the men's eights Olympic final, Mo Sbihi had this message for all the fans who filled Molesey Boat Club and cheered them on.

The bronze medalist said: 'A huge thank you to all those at the club, we really appreciate the support. Hopefully we have inspired the next generation of rowers, not just from Molesey, but from all over the country, to win more medals for Great Britain.'

Greg Searle, also from Molesey Boat Club, said: 'I am very proud of the way we raced although I am disappointed in the resul. But I could not be more proud of the guys who gave their all in a really tough race.'

Great Britain were pipped into third by Germany and Canada in a thrilling final and in front of a sell-out crowd at Eton Dorney.

WANDSWORTH'S  Emma Pooley was in tears at the end of today's road cycling time trials as she was pushed down into sixth place in the final positions.

Speaking to reporters, Pooley stayed hunched over her bike, head down, a union jack clip holding back her hair and tears in her eyes.

She said: "I shouldn't have got my hopes up."

The rider, 40 seconds behind the medal positions, was asked if she would compete at the next Olympics but said: "I'm not thinking four years ahead at the moment."

Gold was taken by Kristin Armstrong of the US, who came out of retirement after starting a family to defend her Olympic title, dominating the race from start to finish with a final time of 37 minutes 34 seconds.

Pooley said of the American: "I've actually never beaten her in a time trial, so there you go."

Judith Arndt came in second place while Russia's Olga Zabelinskya added a second bronze to her haul for this Olympics, having reached the road race podium at the weekend.

GB's Lizzie Armitstead, who claimed silver at the weekend, finished today's event in tenth position.

Anger has been mounting at stations across Richmond and Kingston as the time trials have caused delays across the network.
South West Trains has just issued a warning on Twitter for people to avoid using Hampton Court and Surbiton stations, at the very heart of the time trials, after larger than expected crowds poured into the stations.
On Twitter the press team stated nearly all trains and crews were on duty and that they could not fit any more trains along the tracks.
They also added that services were planned 18 weeks in advance.
Those travelling to the time trials are advised to use Esher station instead.

People came out of their houses with their chairs. That’s what makes it so special. They could watch it on TV and go out as the bikes fly past, it’s unique”

Greg Searle and his team mates may be ultimately disappointed with their bronze medals, but the crowd have nothing but applause and congratulations after the thrilling final they have just witnessed.

The gold medal-winning Brits in the women's pairs, Helen Glover and Heather Stanning, are just finishing their press conference and they cannot hide their grins while answering the questions from the world's media.

Did they feel any pressure this morning knowing they had a shot at Team GB's first gold medal of these Games? Like the professionals they are they said no, but who could blame them if they did?

Sue Ryder charity shop in Hersham take advantage of the crowds and use the time trials as an opportunity to raise money.
Assistant manager Amanda Vaughan said: "Hopefully the shop will be nice and busy later on, but the stall is doing well.
"The only time I've ever seen Hersham this buzzing is at the village fair."
But Sue Ryder volunteer Dianne Jackson said she thought the village had missed a real opportunity.
She said: "They should have had a fair on the green, face painting, tombolas. What better chance do you have to showcase Hersham? This is like the X-Factor gone nuts."

Donning drawn on sideburns, the pair cycled in from Weybridge to catch the action.
Tim, 48, said: “He’s very understated and a family orientated man.
“Even after the Tour de France he wasn’t overwhelmed by it all.”
Robin, 51, said he was rooting for Wiggins, who is due to set off from Hampton Court at 3.07pm.
He said: “We’d love a gold to match the one we won this morning. I think that was the first of many.”

Nina said: “We don't care if it rains we will be here to cheer Bradley on.
“He is well rested now so think he has every chance of getting gold.”

TIM ASHTON AT ETON DORNEY: Molesey Boat Club will be celebrating their prodigal sons as Great Britain brought home a bronze medal from the men’s eights in a pulsating final.
Greg Searle, who came out of retirement for London 2012, Mo Sbihi and James Foad – all from Molesey Boat Club – along with Putney’s Phelan Hill as cox, pipped the US by just .30 seconds to claim the bronze medal.
Just over three seconds split the whole field of six with the favourites Germany taking gold and Canada taking silver.
The Eton Dorney crowd were on their feet from start to finish cheering on Great Britain and the finish could not have been any closer and the US boat was closing the gap on Great Britain right up to the line.
Such a great occasion at Eton Dorney and much welcomed success from Great Britain’s rowers – here’s hoping for more tomorrow.

While some businesses have shut up shop due to road closures, the Watermans Arms in Hersham is expecting to do a roaring trade today.
After a busy weekend, the punters are out in force at the pub on Hersham green, which is right on the time trial route.
Manager Katie Blenkinsop said: "We are hoping we'll really benefit from this.
"We are well prepared with Pimm's stalls and a babrbecue and local singer Chris Dowling is due to sing at 1pm.
"We are hoping trade will be good all day, and we can have a nice street party while the road is shut."

TIM ASHTON AT ETON DORNEY: Putney’s Matt Wells has written himself into Olympic rowing history as part of the first Great Britain men’s quadruple sculls to reach the final.
Wells and his three team mates finished third in a slow semi-final, just two seconds behind the winners Croatia, and less than second behind behind Australia, to reach Friday's showdown.
The winning time of 6.03 was down on the heat times which peaked at 5.39.
Great Britain will face Germany, Estonia and Poland in the race for Olympic gold.

MARK CHANDLER ON CYCLIST EMMA POOLEY:

WANDSWORTH’S Emma Pooley is competing in the women’s cycling time trials today, hoping to go one better than the silver medal she won at the Beijing Olympics.

Although the course doesn’t suit the 29-year-old’s strengths, she said: “I’ll do my best and I’m quite happy with how I have been training. If I have given it everything I can’t really complain about my performance.”

The women’s event covers 29 kilometres, and many spectators will also be keeping a firm eye on Lizzie Armitstead, who won silver in the Olympic road race on Sunday.

But a time trial victory for Armitstead may be a medal too far for the Yorkshirewoman, who said: “I’m looking forward to riding an event without any pressure.

“Time trials aren’t really my forte but it is something I will probably look to work on in the future. It will be good to make Emma feel like she can win the gold.”

Competition in the race, which starts at 12.30pm, could come from several sources.

Judith Arndt is the undoubted favourite as the World Champion, while New Zealand’s Linda Villumsen took bronze in the worlds in 2010 and silver in 2011.

MARK CHANDLER'S ON TODAY'S CYCLING:

HOPES are high for a gold today as Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins competes in the men’s Olympic time trial today at Hampton Court Palace.

Also expected to challenge for the men’s podium is Chris Froome, Wiggins’ team-mate in both Team GB and Sky Pro Cycling teams.

Reigning Olympic champion Fabian Cancellara is considered the favourite by many, but he crashed out in Saturday’s road race, leading to question marks over what he can do today.

Wiggins said: “I have 100 per cent faith in the training Tim [Kerrison] has set me and it is more mental than physical. I think that I have done enough now to realise that there is no reason it is suddenly all going to collapse.

“My performances all year have been consistent so I have no reason to think that is going to change, so that comes with age and experience.”
Froome said: “All I can do really is go in there and give it my best shot. I think Brad is in the perfect stead for that and the course suits him really well.”

Reporter Mark Chandler will be at the cycling time trials later today.

MC: Today's Olympic road cycling time trials are going to cause disruption to the road network, some of which has been closed since 5am in preparation.

Routes around Hampton Court along withsections of Richmond, Kingston-upon-Thames and the Elmbridge area of Surrey are affected, with some closures set to last until several hours after the event finish time of 4.30pm.

The women's race is due to start at 12.30pm and finish by 2.15pm, with the men in action from 2.45pm.
