Builders in at long-derelict Twickenham site

Hard at work: Councillor Virgina Morris and leader Lord True Hard at work: Councillor Virgina Morris and leader Lord True

Work has started at the long-derelict former open-air swimming pool site in Twickenham.

The contractors are taking away the first piles of weeds and rubble this week, and aim to complete the work by June – in time for the Queen’s diamond jubilee.

Leader of Richmond Council Lord True said: “The scheme will lead to another outstanding open space in our borough. We hope to open it for the Queen’s diamond jubilee, so the area can live up to its name of Jubilee Gardens.

“This should be credited to the local people who have fought for this for many years.”

Once the riverside gardens are completed the area will be able to host a number of activities as well as musical and theatrical performances.

There is now a digital sign on the Riverside cafe announcing 133 days to go until the opening of the gardens.
That is in exactly 19 weeks, which mean that the gardens will open on 23 June, 3 weeks AFTER the Queens Diamond Jubilee weekend!!

Lord True had better say his prayers as well as hoping it will be open in time because his officers seem to be working to a different timescale.

Maybe it should be renamed as the Queens Olympic Gardens!!

Judging by the picture it looks like they've got a right bunch of cowboys in to do the work

Out of interest why does Virginia Morris appear to be holding a toy shovel?

This is excellent, finally something is happening at the 'pool site', an achievement the LibDems could never manage.

I hope that this simple interim measure is a success, whilst plans are drawn up for the Town Square the people of Twickenham voted for.

Nothing but facetious pointless remarks from Cllr Gareth Roberts. Great news for Twickenham's revitalisation, exactly why I got elected, to sort out the town the Lib Dems left for decades to rot. Next we await the Station decision from Boris.

Scott you old silly - have you forgotten it was the Tories that passed the Station Plans? And as for leaving the town to rot, come May the town will have been under Tory control for six years of the last decade!

Still I'm sure that in 2014 the voters will be DELIGHTED to put their trust in you again now that you've demonstrated that you put blind party loyalty before principles.

Dear silly Gareth obviously do you not know the difference between a Spade and a Shovel.
Let me explain to you.

A shovel is used primarily for lifting & moving material from one place to another, for example from the ground into a wheelbarrow or for mixing mortar . Hence the angle of the handle in relationship to the blade so that when the blade is level with the ground ready to plunge into the material to be moved the handle will be at about knee height making it easier to lift. The angle is called the lift and they do differ slightly from make to make.

A Spade is used for digging, mainly trenches or general garden work.
The blade of a Spade is normally in line with the handle and designed to have the weight of the body exerted with one foot upon it sometimes both feet, whilst keeping it perpendicular. Then levering it back to break the spit of earth free the blade of a spade is narrower, flatter and shorter than that of a shovel
Try mixing some builders mortar with a spade and digging a trench with a shovel and you and your back will soon know the difference

Ah I bow to your superior knowledge of spades and shovels, Eyeball

I call a spade a spade ...

I remember just how popular at the height of summer Twickenham pools were when I was a child, much more so than Richmond's in Parkshot (now gone) or Chiswick's (also open air, and now rebuilt as enclosed). In those days people went to the pools for fun not serious business like learning to swim or racing in lanes. The paving areas near the pool had a lot of sunbathers too as the stone warmed up nicely. Simple pleasures of childhood that you don't get at indoors pools. I just hope the replacement 'open space' - clearly not deserving the name 'park' - gives as much pleasure, though somehow I doubt it will.

The Riverside site appears to caught on a time warp.

The digital sign now reads....134 days!

Although there is work going on, it must be detrimental to project completion.
