A garden designer whose vocation was inspired by surviving London’s worst ever terrorist attack is appealing for help bringing his experience to life through flowers.
Matthew Childs, who lives in Ashen Grove, in Wimbledon Park, needs to raise £15,000 in sponsorship to build a garden in July’s Hampton Court Palace flower show.
Mr Childs, a former advertising man, who designed the waterfall garden in Wimbledon Park, decided to pursue his dream after surviving the July 2005 bomb near Edgware Road Underground station, which left him needing surgery to save his leg from amputation.
The 34-year-old said: “When I was carried out of the Underground by the emergency services from darkness into light I felt a great sense of hope and this continued to grow with the support I received throughout my recovery.
“It has placed a new perspective on life for me and I feel I owe it to those people who did not survive the attacks to make the most of the chance I have been given.”
His design for this year’s flower show is based on his harrowing experience but he needs another £15,000 to make the design a reality.
