Kew could become home to a community market after residents expressed a strong interest in seeing weekly or fortnightly outdoor stalls in the heart of the community.

An independent questionnaire sent to 5,500 Kew households showed residents were in favour of setting up a market in Kew village. Councillors have since flagged up the idea with Richmond Council for consideration.

Councillor Jean-Francois Burford, ward member for Kew, said the survey showed 91 per cent of respondents were in favour of the market idea and believed it would be a positive step for the community.

He said: “The idea behind it is to boost footfall in the village and create extra trade for the existing shops. Kew [would be] a great place for a farmers or community market.”

Councillor Pamela Fleming, Richmond Council’s cabinet member for communities, said she supported the idea of community markets.

She said: "Councillor [Clare] Head and I met the three ward councillors to discuss the survey that was carried out but there is a considerable amount of work that needs to be done behind the scenes before any market can be up and running.

“However, I would like to assure all those who have expressed an interest that we will listen to people’s opinion throughout.”
