A misjudged landing led to delays this morning as a swan got caught under a train near Hampton Wick station.

The hapless bird failed to complete its landing on to Kingston Bridge at about 10.15am and fell on to rail tracks below.

The electric current on the line was isolated for about 10 minutes while Network Rail staff worked to free the swan.

A Network Rail spokeswoman said: "It affected about 15 trains for a couple of minutes each.

"The swan is alive and safe and has been taken to the Swan Sanctuary in Shepperton."

A Swan Sanctuary spokesman said: "The swan is now doing fine and eating well due in no small way to the exceptionally swift action of the guys at Network Rail."
