A popular music venue faces an uncertain future after it was put up for sale.

Time was called on the Red Lion, in Heath Road, Twickenham, as the final band took to the stage last Sunday.

A spokeswoman for the landlords, Enterprise Inns, said it would be down to the future owner to use the premises as they wished.

A farewell jam night was held last weekend at the pub which has seen bands and solo musicians take to the stage for more than 30 years.

Red Lion fan Hester Huttenbach, of Norcutt Road, Twickenham, who attended the final night said: “Having been to the Red Lion ever since moving to Twickenham 25 years ago I have heard young and old perform there, including Chris Farlowe.

“It is with great sadness to see the demise of another public house in the area and one with such a history of good and sometimes bad entertainment.

”The bar staff kept up an unfailing supply of drink to keep the whole place dancing the night away. It certainly was a packed last night to remember.”

The current licence-holders of the pub are hoping to carry on the popular music nights at the Tup, in Richmond Road, Twickenham, which they took over on Wednesday.

Duty manager Adam McIlwaine said: “We’re planning to continue the music and have our open-mic and band nights.

“It will be very sad to see it go.

“There have been bands using it for 30 to 35 years.

“Hopefully a lot of people who came to listen to the music will follow the music to our new location.”

He added that if the music nights proved successful they would look in to sound-proofing the pub and improving the music facilities in the hope of attracting more well-known acts.

Rumours the pub was being sold to Tesco were denied by a spokeswoman from Enterprise Inns.

She said: “Enterprise Inns can confirm the Red Lion is for sale on the open market.”
