Emergency road safety measures are being put in place in Hampton after a man was killed after being hit by a bus just yards from home.

Raymond Barrett was killed when he was hit by a route 111 bus at the junction of High Street and Station Road, just before 11.30pm last Wednesday, February 11.

The 61-year-old was thought to have been on his way to his Station Road home after collecting a takeaway when he was hit by the bus, on its way from Kingston to Heathrow.

London Ambulance Service sent two crews and an air ambulance doctor in a car to the scene but the man was pronounced dead upon their arrival.

A police spokesman said a postmortem examination revealed Mr Barrett’s death was caused by “multiple injuries” and an inquest was opened and adjourned at Kingston Coroner’s Court on Tuesday.

Richmond Council confirmed police have requested double yellow lines be painted at the junction immediately and a spokesman said they would be put down as soon as possible.

Councillor Suzette Nicholson, who represents Hampton on Richmond Council, said double yellow lines were planned as part of a proposal to alter road layout in the area – known as the Hampton Area Improvement Scheme – but their installation was being brought forward.

She said: “Police have asked to put double yellow lines on the corner – people were parked on the corner, the bus was trying to manoeuvre round and hit him.

“This hasn’t happened on that particular section of road in the last five years but it is difficult to cross there as people park, I know that from experience.”

A council spokesman said: “Following the fatal road accident the police requested that double yellow lines be put down to prohibit parking.

“A temporary traffic notice has been served, giving the council the power to install the lines, which will be done as swiftly as possible, weather permitting.

“A temporary traffic order will follow, for a period of 18 months.

“The final stage will be a permanent order.”

London United, which runs the 111 route, has launched an investigation into the accident.

A spokesman said: “We would like to express our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the gentleman who died.”

The Met Police’s Hampton Collision Investigation Unit is investigating the circumstances of the collision. Anyone with information should call 020 8941 9011.
