St Margarets campaigners hope to raise cash for Romanian children

Dedicated St Margarets campaigners are hoping to raise £25,000 to help send doctors to some of the 9,500 children abandoned each year in Romania.

Their work, including running the London Duathlon and organising cake sales, has so far raised £6,000 with the rest to follow in the next six to eight months through the St Margarets Wardrobe Swap and Sale, a MusicFest at the Turk’s Head, a photo gallery and a schools programme to get children involved in the campaign.

“Two hours away from leafy Richmond is Romania where children born with conditions treatable here are fighting for their lives.”

Supporter, Julie Hollyer, said: “Many of us enjoy ‘life in a bubble’ and all the benefits and privileges which living in this kind of area brings.

I hope these kind people will spend a moment to consider the plight of children in this country. Poor Baby P died with terrible injuries that were seen and shrugged off by social workers and so-called medical staff. Neighbours must have heard screams and other noises, family members must have felt something wrong was going on. Are British people too concerned about keeping to themselves, not making a scandal? It's easier to consider the poverty abroad. It makes one feel good and superior to involve themselves with foreign causes. Why not continue doing that, if it pleases you, but go out into your neighborhood, listen and watch, there may be another Baby P case in the making. Don't let another child suffer and die because of turning away. It is your business, it is ALL of us who are responsible.
