A new 'super cycle hub' could be built at Richmond Station.

South Western Railway (SWR) have secured £3m from the Department for Transport to provide around a thousand bike spaces over the car park with improved facilities and security.

Currently there are 220 cycle parking spaces in the station car park. The facilities are pretty basic with just cycle hoops and shelters.

Forecasts also show that the numbers are insufficient for the future – with the number of people cycling to the station expected to triple over the next few years.

Phil Dominey, stakeholder manager at SWR, said: "South Western Railway is committed to giving our passengers the full range of available options to travel sustainably door to door. We are keen to promote cycling in the Richmond area and this cycle hub will transform existing facilities at the station to give users a quality cycle facility based on feedback from the consultation."

The consultation is being carried out this week, others are invited to have their say online on how improvements can be made in the future so more people can be encouraged to cycle to the station.

Councillor Peter Buckwell, cabinet member for highways and street scene, said: “More and more people are cycling either to work, to school or just to visit our beautiful borough. We need to make sure that they can do so safely.

“We want to encourage sustainable transport to and from train stations and we want to make it easier for cyclists to integrate a bike into their rail journey. However, for this to work we need to provide the relevant storage infrastructure.

“A cycle hub would mean more people can trust their bikes are being left in a safe and secure place and will still be there when they get back. I hope that over the next week, cyclists will discuss their ideas with the consultation staff at Richmond Station or have their say online.”
