A talented artist from Nelson Primary school won a posted competition to promote a new speed zone in Richmond.

Cllr Peter Buckwell presented Megan MacArthur, in year five, with an award, for her winning design to highlight a new 20mph speed zone, on a road in Whitton, at a surprise school ceremony, on July 17.

The new zone is on Nelson Road, between Constance Road and the High Street junction and includes all cul-de-sacs off Nelson Road between these two points.

Cllr Peter Buckwell, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Street Scene, said: “We will now use this as a design for the 20mph signage in the Nelson Road area.

“Nelson Road struggles with heavy traffic volumes during peak hours and, following public consultation we received a very clear result".

The amended speed zone follows on from the safety works undertaken last summer and is intended to complement the existing safety measures in place.

"I am pleased that we have been able to design a scheme that will hopefully make the area safer for drivers, cyclists and also for pedestrians, including the children travelling to and from school," added the Highway Cllr.

"We hope that improving safety levels will encourage people to leave their cars at home and travel instead by bike or on foot.”

To lower the limit, Megan's design will be installed on both sides of the road at the two entry points on Nelson Road and 20 roundel markings will be painted on the carriageway throughout the zone.
