Kew Riverside Primary School’s new library, named the ‘Book Jungle’, was officially opened on Friday, March 17.

Staff, parents and children posed for photos with the Mayor of Richmond-upon-Thames, Councillor David Linnette, who opened the library.

More than 100 guests, including author and illustrator Marcia Williams, parents, family members, ex-pupils and governors also turned out to support the new library.

The Book Jungle was named by pupil Felix Pettigrew following an in-school competition.

Parents of Kew Riverside pupils raised money to pay for half the cost of the library, and the school provided the rest.

The project was coordinated by the head of English, Laura Martin.

Cllr Linnette said: “It’s a delight to come along today and open this brand new library which is a wonderful new resource for the children of this school.

“It is vital to get primary school children interested in reading at the earliest possible stage which is why I know the Book Jungle will be a welcome new addition to this wonderful school.”

Darren Norman, the headteacher at Kew Riverside Primary School, said the children were “thrilled” to have a new library.

He said: “I know that over time the library will become an even more appealing space where children can be lost in our jungle and lost in a book.”
