The 37-year-old man who was killed after an early morning police chase has been named as Benjamin Rich from Richmond borough.

Mr Rich died after crashing into a stationary lorry on the southbound carriageway of the A316 at Kempton Park at about 4.40am on February 8.

He was declared dead at the scene.

Driving a black Audi TT, he was being chased by police cars at the time.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has confirmed it is investigating the circumstances around Mr Rich’s death.

A post-mortem examination of Mr Rich has been done. The driver of the lorry was taken to West Middlesex Hospital but has since been released.

IPCC deputy chairwoman Sarah Green said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Benjamin Rich and all those affected by this tragic event.

“We have met with Mr Rich’s family to explain our role and on behalf of the family I would like to ask the media to respect their privacy.

“Following this terrible incident we will be conducting a full investigation. We encourage anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward as soon as possible.”

A section of Ham Common was taped off on February 8 to allow police officers to collect forensic data in connection with the crash, which happened almost seven miles away by road.
