Proposals from fast food giant McDonald's to open their restaurant on the Twickenham, Hampton and Hanworth borders all night at weekends have been met with strong resistance by a West Twickenham councillor.

The multi-national burger behemoth has submitted plans to Richmond upon Thames Council to extend the opening hours of its drive-thru branch on the Apex corner roundabout, where the A316 feeds into Twickenham Road and Hampton Road, but Councillor Munira Hassam has launched a campaign against the plans.

A Richmond council spokesperson confirmed it had received the application to open the restaurant until 2am during the week and for 24 hours at the weekend and Coun Hassam, who is also Liberal Democrat candidate for the Feltham and Heston parliamentary seat, which has a border near by, has alerted locals to the plans.

She, along with fellow West Twickenham councillors, has been asking residents for their experience of living so close to the store and asking their views on the proposals.

"I have had a number of complaints from residents in Hampton Road East who said their front gardens are used as McDonald's dustbins, regularly finding burger and fries wrappers on their properties, as well as half empty milkshake containers spilt on the pavement outside," she said.

"Others have complained about the fat smells emanating from McDonald's.

"The extended hours will increase litter and bad smells in the area, and increase noise during the night from cars using the McDonald's.

"The overwhelming majority of responses that I have received have been against the application.

"I am encouraging all residents to register their views with the planning department before the consultation closes on July 12 and I will work with residents to make strong representations to the planning committee when the application is heard."

A spokesperson for McDonald's said: "As a progressive company McDonald's seek to provide a service that is convenient to the way people live their lives today.

"Based on our experience of other similar locations we have every reason to believe that our opening for longer in Hanworth will be popular with customers, who are made up of local people, shift workers and passing traffic.

"We are also very happy to meet with local people, including Coun Hassam to discuss their concerns."
