A cyclist flew over the top of a car during a crash in Twickenham yesterday morning and injured his head, back and leg, according to witnesses.

An ambulance crew was called at about 11.45am to the junction of First Cross Road and Hampton Road by Twickenham Green to reports of a man in his 60s who had collided with the car while riding his bike.

Richmond and Twickenham Times sports reporter Stuart Amos, who was nearby, said there was a big bang as the cyclist was flung off his bike in the crash.

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

He said: “The cyclist flew in the air and over the back of the car, before landing in a heap in the middle of the road.

“Five or six passers-by helped the cyclist and directed traffic while they applied first aid to very nasty gash on his calf.

“The cyclist, who told us his name was John, seemed fine but he had whacked his head - his helmet was cracked - and was complaining of back pain.

"I thought he looked progressively worse while we waited for services to arrive.”

The man was taken to a south west London hospital.

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

Mr Amos said it looked as if the bicycle’s gear sprocket had gone deep into the man’s calf, and he was told by a police officer the injuries could be “life-changing.”

He added that he believed the man driving the car stopped momentarily then drove off.

Twickenham resident Fran Perrow said the emergency services were still in First Cross Road at 6.30pm that evening.

This was the second incident on the road this week, after an alleged collision between a delivery driver and a pedestrian on Tuesday.

Ms Perrow tweeted on June 14: “Double casualty accident Twickenham green, Domino's pizza delivery guy down and a pedestrian. Hampton Rd blocked.”

She added after the accident yesterday: “You would think that road is fairly safe for people on two wheels but there have been two accidents in the last week or so.”
